Working in the world of content creation for over 15 years, I’m a writer and photographer. While much of my work focuses on my outdoor passions, finding, capturing and telling stories is my true strength. Getting to the heart and soul of the story that needs to be told, whether that’s a tourism offering, an adventurous athlete, brand new gear,  or a tall tale of the one that got away, my passion for the work, shows in the finished product.

Commercial

From concept to finished product, in the studio, in the air, or underwater, the more challenging, the more exciting. I’m ready  to shoot on location, or right here in Collingwood, ON.

Editorial

Working in an editorial capacity in Canada and throughout the world, ask about my extensive collection of stock photography and adventure stories. Or why don’t we collaborate on something?

Writing

I love telling a good tale. Writing everything from in-depth features, to video scripts and gear reviews, I work with clients and editors to create the content needed to deliver their stories to the right audience.

“Colin is the unicorn of photographers: creative, easy to work with, and prolific. I worked with Colin on a remote mountain river in Naats’ihch’oh National Park Reserve, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Not only was he shooting from sun up to sun down in a place where the sun barely set, he had creative vision, superb technical skills, and let us put him on a live-bait mid-river (for an hour) to get the perfect whitewater paddling shot… If you’re looking for a photographer that will get you results in challenging conditions and do it with humour, Colin’s your guy. I can’t wait to work with him again.”

–Lyn Elliott

Experiential Tourism Developer, Parks Canada

“Colin’s attention to detail and eye for intriguing stories is matched only by his incredible facial hair and skill on a bicycle. As an editor, he seeks the most engaging content for his readers and as a writer he excels at finding that content. I have worked both for and with Colin and in all cases it has been a pleasure. I hope to work with him again soon, if only to glean some of his laidback energy and witty humour for my own use. I’d plagiarize him any day.”

Go with the Floe

Searching for narwhal on the spring ice of Pond Inlet, Nunavut. On our final trip to the floe edge, it’s obviously cracking up; this landscape is constantly in flux and it’s deteriorating fast. We get as close as is reasonable and see the cracks as they rise and fall...

Whitewater Family Adventure: The French River

We set off in the rain. The pouring rain. The kind of rain that soaks through to our underwear in minutes. But we can’t stop. We have to get to camp and there are two sets of rapids to get through today. The families have just met for the first time and the kids...

The Arctic on the Cheap: Ivvavik National Park

We’ve been hiking for five hours now. And the Highway to Heaven trail has delivered all that it promised; a challenging, yet rewarding hike in the Arctic Circle. We’ve seen caribou and mountain goats. We reached the summit of Dragon Tors. We explored the barren lands...

The Fifth Coast for Mountain Life Annual

On December fifteenth, 2016, Larry Cavero runs out of Lake Huron and bolts for his car. He exchanges a few quick words with the other guys and jumps in his vehicle. They’re surfing a rocky break composed of the Niagara Escarpment’s limestone; the rock shelves here,...

Surviving Ten Days Alone in the Wilderness

“It was the happiest time of my life,” says Chris Larkin. “Undoubtedly.” His answer is instant. There’s no hesitation. The best time in his 65 years on earth was 31 years ago. It lasted ten days. It was that time he lost absolutely everything...

Breaking Good: Family Surf Camp in Costa Rica

If you’re looking for a family getaway like no other, I’m not sure you could beat the Peaks ‘n Swells Family Surf Camp in Montezuma, Costa Rica. Run by Hillary Harrison and her husband Ryan Watts (both former world class mountain bike racers), the couple spends summer...

Photographers Without Borders: Guatemala

Photographers Without Borders In November I spent two weeks working with the fine folks at Photographers Without Borders. NGO Photography is something I've always wanted to be involved with. PWB set me up with Alma De Colores, an organization that creates employment...

Sonnie Trotter in Mountain Life Annual

It was a huge pleasure to work on this piece with Sonnie Trotter for the fine folks at Mountain Life Annual. Considered by many to be Canada's best climber, Sonnie is a true outdoors pro in every sense of the word. Retelling the story of him climbing Ontario's hardest...

The Snake Charmer

Originally published in Mountain Life Magazine. “Right draw, right draw!” yells Al Pace from the stern. “We’ve got some rocks in play here… follow the vee,” he continues. I’m bow-paddling and commentary is constant. “Oh! Awesome!” he cries as we round a bend in the...

Paradise Stalling: Skiing in Gulmarg, India

Originally printed in SKIER magazine. It dumped all day yesterday and today it’s perfect bluebird. Not to take anything away from skiers, but it’s the kind of day ski journalists, photographers and cinematographers dream about. And though we debated over a breakfast...
